4.Surface Finishes for CNC Milling Parts

CNC Milling Parts are left as-milled, and surface finish can change the appearance, surface roughness, hardness and chemical resistance of the produced parts. Determined by the material using, a part can have one to serval available surface finishing options.

  • CNC Milling Parts

    AS machined:

Machined parts have minor visible tool marks. The standard as machined surface roughness (Ra) is 3.2 μm. Surface finish requirements can be increased to 1.6, 0.8 and 0.4 μm.

  • Anodizing:

Type II & Type III adds a wear and corrosion resistant ceramic layer to the surface of the part. Can be dyed to different colors. Type III offers greater protection than Type II.

  • Sandblasting:

Bead blasted parts have a matte finish with a light texture. Mainly for visual purposes. Sand blasting size: 80um as standard. 50-120um available.

  • Powder Coating:

Powder coating adds a wear and corrosion finish to the surface of the parts. Has higher impact resistance compared to anodizing. Large range of colors available.

  • Polishing:

Polishing is to make the parts have a smoother and brighter finish.

  • Plating:

Advanced Plating Technologies offers plating aluminum alloys in various finishes including electroless nickel plating, tin plating, silver plating and gold plating.

5. FAQ

Q: What is universal milling?
A: A milling machine having a table fitted with all motions and a dividing head with change gears so that it can perform any type of milling operation.

Q: What is the purpose of milling?
A: The milling technique is used to machine and produce work pieces made of free- cutting material. The milling technique is used to produce, mainly on prismatic components, flat, curved, parallel, stepped, square and inclined faces as well as slots, grooves, threads and tooth systems.

Q: What is milling process used for?
A: The machining process of using rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece by advancing or feeding in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool. Milling processes are operations in which the cutting tool rotates to bring cutting edges to bear against the workpiece.
