1.What is Cold Forging?

Youlin® Cold forging, commonly known as cold forming / cold heading, is a metal shaping & manufacturing process in which bar stock is inserted into a die and squeezed into a second closed die. The process, completed is at room temperature or below the metal's recrystallization temperature to form a metal into a desired shape or configuration.

2.Cold Forging Manufacturing Process

1.Blank is Cut from a coil of wire
2.Advanced for Forming The blank is advanced into the first station
3.1st Form The blank is formed, then advanced to the next station
4.2nd Form During the same stroke of the machine, the previous part is formed again in the second station. Work is performed on multiple parts to produce one finished part per machine stroke. [Some parts require multiple dies and blows to form the intended design]
5.Formed Part Completed part is ejected from die

3.Advantages and Disadvantages of Cold Forging

Cold Forging→require very little or no finishing work
→no need for a secondary heat treatment prior to machining
→final weight of Youlin® cold forging part equals initial weight of the material
→good level of attainable dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality
→economic advantages combined with high production rates and long die life

Cold Forging→only simple shapes in high volumes can be shaped
→achievable deformation levels and shaping grade are much more limited
→cold forged metals are less ductile, residual stress may occur.
→cold forging extrusion requires also a heat treatment
→cold forging cannot be used on every steel grade

4.Cold Forging Services for Companies in Wide Ranges of Industries

Cold ForgingAerospace: The extreme environments of the aerospace industry require top performance from special alloys that are high-quality and durable.

Cold ForgingAutomotive: Youlin serves the automotive industry in a variety of ways. Chances are very good that cold forming was used to build something in your car.

Cold ForgingComputer Electronics: Cold forming processes help make components in computers and electronics smaller, a key to new product development in these constantly evolving industries.

Medical: Medical devices are commonly produced with metals that are difficult to alter with traditional machining processes. Cold forming allows us to forge these unique metals at high production volume and speed.

5. FAQ

Q: Is cold forging the strongest?
A: A very important factor is the ability of cold forging to significantly improve the strength and integrity of the final part. Forging yields much stronger parts than can be achieved with casting, weldments, or powder metal processes and it is also superior to machining of raw bar or plate metal.

Q: What metals can be cold forged?
A: The most common metals in cold forging applications are usually standard or carbon alloy steels. Cold forging is typically a closed-die process. Cold forging is generally preferred when the metal is already a soft metal, like aluminum.

Q: How is cold forging done?
A: Also called cold forming, cold forging is a process that takes place near room temperature, rather than at higher temperatures like warm and hot forging. It's done by placing the workpiece in-between two dies, and pounding the dies until the metal assumes their shape.
